Some of the monsters are hilarious. Pokemon, they kind of Americanized the names a lot. Not kind of. A lot. They probably tried to translate puns that couldn't really translate. I get the sense that the names in DWM are direct translations : " Beanman " - a bean with a spear. Putrepup , a roadkill zombie. JewelBag. MadGoose ( is that a beer ? ) . Bosstroll. Treeboy. There is no pokedex. You cannot view your creatures stats while you are in battle ( other than HP, you can't look at the moves description etc like in pokemon ) . If you want to read about a monster you have to go to a library. There's a kind of Rogue element to where, you don't really know what moves do exactly. You don't get to see the level of the monsters you're battling unless you capture them. The monsters die. They turn into little gravestones that follow you around until you visit a priest who " calls back the soul of Sparky " and says " the gods will always be with you. " All of the strongest monsters could not be described as something any gods would smile on- they are hr giger/wuxia demon in appearance. Evil hindu idols that would haunt hp lovecrafts racist nightmares. Kaiju. The nicest one is a dragon. The descriptions say things like " A being that seeks ultimate power " , " an evil cleric who can use any spell " , " a being dedicated to world chaos ", " Reborn for total destruction " , " lords over all other demons with power ", " a demon lord that uses dark power " , " Dedicated to chaos and domination ", " Purely evil and divinely powerful " . Now look at that cute lil tyke on the box. These are his friends. He may be a 5 yr old with a cute hat but he’ll slit your throat and spill it on a libation stone to summon these things. And he's in charge of THEM. And these are what you get by combining Beanman and Boxslime and Zapbird. Thanks toriyama.
